Holiday 2015
Pumpkin Auction

Once again, this October OCSA’s Tower
lobby was haunted with
a plethora of painted
pumpkins. The display box
and tables were overflowing with dozens of
the orange gourds, each
unique in its own shape
and design.
For those of you brave
enough to have dared to
witness this eerie display,
you would have seen
pumpkins decorated like
the BB-08 droid from “Star
Wars: The Force Awakens,” a box of donuts,
Starbucks coffee (probably Pumpkin Spice Latte),
Five Nights at Freddy’s,
Disney villains, everyone’s
favorite dragon Toothless,
and over one hundred
more! Over $3,000 was
raised this year, breaking
the records of previous
years by nearly $1,000.
This year, the most
popular pumpkin was the
“Trumpkin” by junior Laura
McKelvey (VA). What was
first a play on words from
Laura’s father became
a $150 piece of art, and
also made an appearance in the OC Register.
“It’s been the most viral
thing I’ve ever done,”
McKelvey said. “As an
artist, I was trying to make
Pumpkins on display for the VA pumpkin auction.

things that are appealing
to me, but also something
that other people would
like.”
As if Donald Trump isn’t
spooky enough, putting
his face on a pumpkin
is even more terrifying!
Surprisingly, it wasn’t that
hard for Laura to pull off.
“I mainly drew [his face]
on, then the hair. A lot of
people asked me what
the hair is made of. It’s
actually a pillow that we
cut up and made into
hair, and we just glued it
on,” McKelvey said.
So how do the students get ahold of the
pumpkins? Junior Jean
Song (VA), creator of
the Totoro and Baymax
pumpkins, said that “parents and other people
donate the pumpkins,
and they bring them over
to
