Floating Shelves & Closet Additions

Shelving is probably the most important aspect when trying to organize and condense your home office into something more functional . Start by installing some floating shelves on a naked wall . You can find these shelves finished and in a variety of sizes , so don ’ t be afraid to mix and match styles for an artistic effect . Placement of shelving is often an art form in itself .
Organize files and computer paper , along with storage bins and smaller boxes on the shelves . It helps to add some greenery and maybe an accent figurine for décor . Try a small succulent in a decorative pot , or a bronze book end for some glam . You can organize miscellaneous files by purchasing monochromatic folders to put them in , and then labeling the folders discretely , so that the label isn ’ t legible upon immediate entry . A small black & white label near the edge of the folders or boxes will do .
Shelving is just as important within a closet , so if there is closet space in your office , install shelving on the back wall to hold important papers , safes , supplies , and anything else that you may not want kept out in the open . The advantage of installing shelving within a closet is that you get to place them higher , where they cannot easily be reached . This means you can store older files and extras that you may not need for a while , but happen to have . Keep a small stepladder just inside the closet door if you do this , so that the stored items are accessible when needed .
Use sideways crates in place of floating shelves for a larger storage area , and added flare . Flipping crates on their sides and securing them to the wall , can also double as shelving and as a cubby , where things less appealing to the eye can be hidden in the back , while
pretty book covers and décor items can sit up front . You can use natural wooden crates for a sophisticated , yet organic feel , or painted crates for a brighter look . Install small hooks on the underbelly of the crates , and you will be able to hang up cords , chargers , lanyards , and anything else you may want off of your desk .
Having a variety of open storage pieces like these is a great concept because

it makes everything look organized , and still keeps all of the items easily accessible . For bulkier items , consider storing them in a corner cabinet or bookshelf .
