For those of us who work from home , we know the challenge of keeping a clean workspace , especially when we ’ re in the midst of a big project with a fast-approaching due date . Even in home offices that lay dormant until tax season , or whenever a bill is due , it is hard to create a functional space that we feel good in while we work .

Room designs are intended to make their inhabitants feel comfortable , and to bring out the personal style of the homeowner . The last thing anyone wants to do is a bunch of work , and even less when their workspace is dull and dreary . Here are some tips for revamping your office into a place of comfort , functionality , and enjoyment , even if the room ’ s initial purpose isn ’ t so appealing .

ROOM DESIGNS ARE INTENDED TO MAKE THEIR INHABITANTS FEEL COMFORTABLE

Multi-Function Furniture

A room ’ s furniture is just as important as the purpose of the room itself . Without functional pieces , the room fails to live up to its full potential . A room , for example , with great big windows , has the ability to bring warmth and lots of natural light to the space , but if giant bulky furniture is added , along with a darker color pattern , the purpose of the installed windows falls short .
If your office has a good amount of windows , make use of the natural light , and bring in lighter , sheer curtains , along with natural wood tones and a neutral wall color . Stay organized by adding in a multi-purpose desk , that can double as both a work surface and a storage unit .
These types of desks are usually minimal in width , with high backs and built-in shelving . Make sure you choose a desk that also has some storage underneath , like several drawers or a cabinet . If you ’ re repurposing an old desk into a more stor-
age-friendly model , you can install shelving above on your own , and add storage items on the bottom , such as a small filing cabinet or a roll-out cubby .
If there is space for a lounge chair / reading chair , you can add an ottoman for extra comfort . When choosing an ottoman , opt for one that has a removable top with a storage bin inside . This is great for storing magazines , extra paper , blankets , or anything else you may want out of sight .
Your home office may also double as a guest room , so why not make it fully functional by adding a queen-sized bed ? Chances are , if you ’ re using the room for two different purposes , it is probably because you don ’ t have the space to begin with , so introducing a traditional bed into the tight fit just won ’ t work . Opt for a murphy bed or wall bed instead .
There are hundreds of different options , and you can purchase a model that also includes a couch or sitting area in the installation . This saves space and time when your guests drop in for an event , as all you have to do is pull down the latch and the entire piece transforms right before your eyes .
