The Thriller in Manila

Construction starts this month at Puerto Azul, situated close to the capital city on the shores of Manila bay. Originally a Gary Player design, Puerto Azul opened in the late 1970’s and was, for a time, the place for Manillan high society to be seen. As time and fashion changed, so the fortunes of the resort waned until a local entrepreneur entered into a long term lease for the land a year or so ago, with plans to restore the resort to its former glory.

With the intention of hosting a European Tour event at the resort from 2019, we’ve been working since last summer to produce plans for the complete renovation of the course. While the routing changes are relatively minor, every other aspect of the project will be new.

Following a competitive tender process, a local golf course construction company has been awarded the contract, with the services of one of our team of shapers working closely alongside the company to ensure the very best quality. Work on site is expected to be completed next summer.

Arrivals

The EGD family is growing. Congratulations to Len and Kyle, and to Annie and Gary, for the arrivals of Wylee Taggart and Callum Johnston. Who knows, one of them might be editing this magazine in another twenty-five years?

North Pole Open?

While we can’t share too much information about this at the moment, we are working with a promotor intending to host a North Pole Open in 2018. The logistics of this are as extreme as the temperatures will be next April when up to forty-eight competitors will be flown into the temporary arctic exploration station located within sledging distance from the true North Pole. Once there, the players will enjoy (if that’s the right word) competitive golf over a course we will prepare through the snow and icefields, as well as a trip to the true North Pole.
