Events like Get Online Week are a great way to promote tech as a career. They are
also about informing, encouraging and empowering people to do so – actively and
directly. This is essential given that in the near future, 90% of jobs - in careers such
as engineering, accountancy, nursing, medicine, art, architecture, and many more will require some degree of digital skills.

This week is European Get Online Week (GOW), a campaign aimed to engage and
empower people to use technology and the Internet with confidence and acquire
digital skills. #GOW15 will see the involvement of 25 countries and directly target
more than 50,000 Europeans. I take this opportunity to summarise our actions and
targets with regards to boosting digital skills and jobs in Europe.

High-level digital skills, encompassing computational thinking, programming
and an understanding of how and when to apply technology are increasingly
understood to be a core literacy for Europe. That’s clear from the prominence of
digital initiatives – this week also happens to be Get Online Week, the EU’s annual
digital empowerment campaign engaging people to use technology and the
Internet with confidence.
Microsoft’s commitment to the promotion of
e-skills across Europe was key for the support of
Get Online Week. The YouthSpark programme is a
global initiative that aims to create opportunities
for education, employment, and entrepreneurship
for 300 million youth. In Europe, Telecentre Europe
and other two pan-European partners are working
to enable the success of YouthSpark, Get Online
Week being one of the main actions.
