The largest theatre company in Western Canada, the
Arts Club always has a show on somewhere: with three
Vancouver stages and a packed touring schedule, it helps a
lot of local actors, technicians and playwrights pay the rent.
Its Granville Island Stage has a hopping bar, the Backstage
Lounge, with post-show live music some nights. The fare on
offer in the theatre tends towards musicals, classics, dramas
and contemporary comedies, with some premieres. The 2017-
18 season is Artistic Director Bill Millerd ’s last, after 45 years
shepherding the Arts Club from tiny hall to the city’s domi-
nant mainstage. Now that deserves a standing ovation.

Newly reno’d in 2017, this is just one of the many eateries
that take 15 per cent off your food bill if you flash your Arts
Club ticket. Its location opposite the Granville Island Stage
and a menu designed for early diners in a hurry makes it
the logical choice of pre-show restaurant. So does a regional
menu with some unusual offerings — grilled half avocado;
Pacific cod and Pemberton potato pakoras with jalapeño-
apple chutney and fresh mint; bison tartare with Japanese
mustard, fir-tip aioli and root-vegetable chips. Or order fish
and chips — sustainable cod and hand-cut fries.
Also on Granville Island Sandbar and Dockside both serve
quality contemporary menus and offer the ticket discount.

This versatile studio stage offers multiple seating configura-
tions, such as thrust, proscenium, alley and arena. The shows
on offer range across equally diverse choices, and allow the
company to experiment with new and untried works such
as the premiere of Onegin in 2016: the small-scale musical by
Amiel Gladstone and composer Veda Hille, starring husband-
and-wife duo Alessandro Juliani and Meg Roe, was a huge
hit. Watch for the remount at the Granville Island Stage in
late 2017.

One of three in Vancouver, this whimsically named east-
of-Cambie eatery is a good pre-show bet for quality dishes
under $20 prepared with speed but not haste. Share a BC
Salmon Sampler of local wild salmon for two, or go hog wild
for wild-seafood pappardelle of mussels, clams, fresh fish
and prawns in a spicy rosé sauce. Mount Lehman roasted
half chicken with buttermilk mash, peas and carrots is com-
fort food at its finest.
Also in the Olympic Village area Among several offering
15 per cent off your food if you have an Arts Club ticket are
Big Rock Urban Brewery for upscale pub grub, and Nuba for
Lebanese cuisine.
