Future Tech Trends | CEDIA Predictions

Dave Delves Into The Future

Dave Pedigo , CEDIA ’ s VP of Emerging Tech , provides his predictions as to what technologies will be driving the Smart Home in 2020 .
Dave Pedigo and 16 volunteers have created the CEDIA Technology Council , a group that discusses the future and attempts to make concrete predictions regarding what ’ s next in the smart home industry . Recently , the group built a list of 100 predictions for the year 2020 — a document that includes everything from the birth of the residential ‘ social robot ’ to the end of copper wire .
We don ’ t have the space for all 100 here ( you can find the entire list at www . cedia . net ), but here are some of the highlights that we found especially exciting and interesting .
AI and machine learning will monitor ( and fix ) the home
Imagine artificially intelligent plumbing . Imagine the plumbing develops a leak , which triggers a moisture sensor , which tracks the failed pipe or coupling , which orders a small machine loaded with high-tech sealant to close the leak and orders a second machine to mop up .
Embedded microphones will be in most surfaces
You want something done ? Just talk to it : ‘ Turn that on !’ ‘ turn that up !’ ‘ heat the couch !’ But when you couple those embedded mics with small cameras things can get really interesting .
Gesture recognition complements voice control
“ We can do really awesome gesture control if we couple gesture with voice ,” says Alex Capecelatro , Tech

Council member and CEO of JStar the company behind Josh . ai ). “ If I say ‘ Open that ,’ and I point at a shade or say ‘ Turn that on ,’ and point a TV or a light , the camera coupled with the voice is going to make that just really natural .”
Solar power embedded into glass for energy harvesting is emerging .
Why are your windows just sitting there when they could be recharging your phone and other devices too ?
Alternative energy systems will leverage POE ( Power over Ethernet ) lighting systems .
Why is your Ethernet cable only carrying power to your entertainment systems and not your low-voltage LED lights ?
Always-on high-bandwidth connections will make everything virtualised and / or stored in the clouds .
‘ Mummy , Dad said that laptops used to have something he called ‘ memory .’ Is he kidding me ?’
The flexible use of the light socket : Lighting becomes more than lighting .
Think about the amount of coverage ( powered coverage ) that the footprint of a home ’ s network of light sockets provides . Mike Maniscalco of Ihiji , specialist in remote management of IP devices , has : “ You can use that coverage and power to do really interesting things , like integrate sensors into the lighting . Track humidity , people ’ s movements , change patterns based on what ’ s happening in that room .”
Connected luminaires will significantly affect the lighting control industry .
‘ Dad , Mummy says there used to be a thing on the wall called a ‘ light switch .’ Is she kidding around again ?’
Voice and face recognition and authentication services become more ubiquitous .
Yes , your front door will recognise your face and other people ’ s too . “ Joe Smith comes to your door , you get a text message without having to capture video , so that ’ s a convenience ,” notes Tech Council member and Ce Pro editor , Julie Jacobson . “ The other thing is we ’ ve got into so much trouble now with voice recognition , anyone can tell your [ voice-user-interface device ] to order a car . Soon , we will have a universe in which mum can shop online and buy things that Junior can ’ t , since that device will be able to identify different users .”
