Dynamic Range ( HDR ) will have the most impact on the industry . REC2020 colour space defines the specification that has been set for UHDTV and it covers a large percentage of the full XYZ colour space . Currently , a few display technologies are coming to market that are REC2020 complaint , but this will ramp up quickly over the next couple of years . HDR removes the limitations presented by older video signals and provides information about brightness and colour across a much wider gamut range . Stewart Filmscreen is looking to capitalise on these two technologies by providing projection screen materials , which are future-proof and able to handle both of these technologies .”
On the beamer side of things , Shannon argues : “ The most recent significant development in the projection and two-piece projection categories are laser and ultra-short throw ( UST ) projection technology . Laser projection can create whatever wavelength of light you want ( within reason , of course ). So expanded colour gamuts are possible without brightness issues . This means deeper , richer colours that come closer to the vast range of colours our eyes can view . UST projectors allow two-piece projection to be used in pieces that were not possible in the past due to throw distance limitations . A projector can be placed a few feet away versus 10 to 20 feet ( or 3 to 6 meters ) away . Two-piece projection is possible in almost every available space now . We are developing new projection screen materials to complement these new technologies and to create a fabric that is able to go above and beyond the current offerings in the market .”

Distributor Karma-AV took a look at what was on offer to the UK market in terms of screens and decided it needed to create it ’ s own with the Ultimate Screens concept . The range offers easy-to-install fixed-frame screens combined with upfront pricing devoid of hidden costs . The range comprises acoustically-transparent screens in standard sizes and in both 16:9 and 2.35:1 aspect ratios . Bespoke Fixed Frame screens will also be available on short lead times . Many brands require the screen to be attached to the frame and tensioned face down on the ground , risking damage to the velvet frame and screen material , the approach here is to allow this process to be completed in four simple stages after the frame is attached to the wall . Screen features include advanced 4K acoustically-transparent screen material and a tactile ultra-black surround , with high-quality light absorption for strong contrast .
Karma also offers an option when 4K is not considered necessary or the cost is prohibitive , via the Vivitek range of full HD beamers . Offering clean , stable margins , with a 50,000:1 contrast ratio , combined with 2,000 ANSI lumens and RGBRGB colour wheel , it ’ s an option worth bearing in mind . Vivitek ’ s HD5098 , for instance , can be installed on the ceiling with a choice of five different lens options and includes VividMotion technology that allows the smoothing of the picture during fast pan movement .
This summer will see the launch of Optoma ’ s two 4K flagship projectors , the UHD60 and UHD65 . Both projectors will have the same zoom range ( 1.6x ), wide throw ratio ( 1.35 ~ 2.22:1 ) and + 15 % vertical lens shift , with the UHD60 in white and UHD65 in black .
The UHD65 will include PureMotion frame interpolation to achieve 100 % Rec . 709 colour reproduction . Brightness will be confirmed when the final production models are received , but the preliminary specification for the UHD60 is 3,000 lumens and UHD65 is 2,200 . The UHD65 is designed for dedicated rooms , while the brighter UHD60 is designed to cope with higher ambient light conditions .
Optoma will also be launching the GT1080Darbee projector with DARBEE Visual Presence , the second in Optoma ’ s DARBEE range . DARBEE technology is designed to deliver increased levels of depth and realism . The GT1080Darbee is a short throw projector which offers 1080p resolution , Rec . 709 colour , dual HDMI ports , 3,000 lumens of brightness , 25,000:1 contrast ratio and can project a 100in image from just over a metre from a screen or wall . It also features a new Enhanced Gaming Mode with 16ms response time .
