Parting Shot
To say the Calgary Tower is
an iconic part of Calgary’s
skyline is an understatement.
The tower was originally
built as part of an urban
renewal plan, and to celebrate
Canada’s centennial in 1967.
Not only has it been part of
our horizon for 50 years, but
part of our memories. Many
Calgarians have peered
through the observation
deck to look down on 9th
Avenue from 191 metres
high, or dined in Sky 360, the
revolving restaurant for an
anniversary or birthday, or
climbed up 802 steps to the
observation deck for charity.
No matter how you get to
the top, you’re treated to a
view of the city, the foothills,
the prairies and—on a clear
day—the Rocky Mountains.
The building has exterior
LED lights that change
based on the occasion; for
example, they’re lit up in red
for Canada Day or rainbow
colours for Pride. It’s attached
to a walkway system that
connects you with the heart
of downtown—to hotels, the
Glenbow museum and more.
It’s a beacon to orient yourself
if you’re lost, and a familiar
and comforting reminder of
where you are. Treat yourself
to the view and see Calgary
from new heights.
