With an arguably successful first season almost completely under its racing belt, Formula E constructors are looking ahead to season two.

As part of the mandatory routine, it is understood that all eight constructors have successfully completed their crash tests in preparation for next season. Each manufacturer will have already commenced work on power units and gearboxes, some may have already completed initial tests.

The regulations are open enough for constructors to be creative with their designs. The obvious, easier and perhaps more affordable option would be to press forward with a similar McLaren/Hewland power plant to that which is currently in use. Nothing however limits the use of a multiple motor configuration as long as wheels are independently driven.

Don’t be surprised to see some innovation coming out of the Virgin Camp with partners Citroen. NextEV TCR may raise some eyebrows too. It likely won’t be until season three that these technologies are honed and fully developed. By season five (should the sport survive that long), we should see some very innovative, out of the box ideas – redefining electric racing.
