The return of the King?

Le Mans 2014 is a lot like going along to a Terrence Malick film. It's not something you have the pleasure of viewing every day.

An undisputed master, Malick took a hiatus after his 1978 Masterpiece, Days of Heaven, before making his triumphant return in 1998 with the World War Two drama The Thin Red Line.

Coincidentally, 1998 was the last triumph of another undisputed king - Porsche. Their own 15-year hiatus has done nothing to dim enthusiast's opinion they are the rightful owners of the Le Mans throne, but their absence has relinquished their grip on that right. It must now be wrestled from the powerhouse of Audi.

But the Auto Union have been licking their own wounds after a resurgence from Toyota has seen the Japanese giant throw everything and the kitchen sink at claiming the Le Mans crown. Judging by their pace this year it looks likely they'll pull it off. But then the same was said of Peugeot in 2008...

21 Century Endurance racing might be V8 vs V4 vs V6 and front vs rear axle energy recovery but more than that its motor-sport at its most unadulterated. It's 'sport' as well as 'racing'. And long may it continue.
