Trulli’s Saturday was not getting any better after his collision in Qualifying. He stalled at the start of the race and did not get to run.

His fellow Italian team-mate, Michela Cerruti, also had a weekend to forget as she got penalised several times for exceeding track limits, finishing in 14th place ahead of Amlin Aguri's Katherine Legge.

The Brit was one of the three drivers who received the most FanBoost votes, but this didn’t appear to have been beneficial. The Brit was penalised for consuming more power than permitted.

On the penultimate lap, Heidfeld who had been closing in on Prost for several laps, decided to make a lunge up the inside for the lead of the race. But Prost defended aggressively causing a collision and Heidfeld careened off.

He hit a kerb which sent him airborne and into some barriers. Luckily the German escaped in one piece. However, the same could not be said of his Venturi GP Car.

The crash left Di Grassi, Montagny and Daniel Abt in positions 1, 2 and 3. The young German (Abt) was later penalised (a drive-through penalty which he didn’t serve but 57seconds was added to his finish time) for having inadvertently used too much power.

It was a mere 0.7% higher than the stipulated 28kWh. This promoted all the drivers who finished 4th – 9th, dropping Abt to 10th place. This bagged him only 1 point rather than 15points for finishing 3rd.

On the podium was Sam Bird, who joined Di Grassi and Montagny on the inaugural Formula E podium ceremony.
