“I’m not pitying you. I can’t imagine what you’re going through,” Seamus paused and ran a hand through his auburn hair nervously. “I just want you to know that I’m here for you. If the situations were reversed I would be terrified and totally down in the dumps. So, you can talk to me about anything, I’ll listen,” Seamus stuttered out, feeling awkward from intimacy that he created in the room. He hated that sharing emotions were ‘unmanly.’

The room was absolutely quiet as Seamus waited for a response.

“...Thanks,” Tobias muttered, the air in the room still uncomfortable.

Cracking his knuckles, Seamus broke the silence, “So, are you scared?”

“Yeah,” Tobias said in a small voice. “What if I never get to play again?”

“You know that’s not gonna happen. You’re the most skilled player I’ve ever known. If anyone can survive something like this, it’s you,” Seamus said encouragely.

“But what if I can’t. I’ll be out for the next couple months. I’ve already ruined our chance at nationals and now I’m useless. Coach is definitely going to kick me off or at least bench me when I’m back.”

“Stop assuming everything, Toby. We have no idea what’s going to happen in the future, but we can hope for the best,” Seamus said, looking on the bright side.

He always did that, and it constantly annoyed the hell out of Tobias. How could someone be so happy all the time?

“You didn’t cause us to lose, you know that, right?” Seamus said and knocked Tobias out of his thoughts.

“Sure,” Tobias said sarcastically.

“After you were removed from the game, the other team went even harder on us. It wasn’t your fault, they were just too good,” Seamus said.

“It’s fine, whatever. I don’t want to talk about it,” Tobias said as he fidgeted with his hands.

As the door creaked open, Tobias saw the blurry figure of Dr. Jones through his good eye.

“You ready?” She asked and rubbed her hands together.

“Born,” Tobias responded strongly.

“I’ll be here when you come back,” Seamus said shyly and watched as Dr. Jones escorted his teammate out of the room.
