After Cindy started to calm down, she reached for a tissue that was under the passenger seat. In the split second that her eyes were away from the road, she drifted into the other lane. All Cindy heard was the screeching sound of a horn, then nothing.

“Hello?” Lyla answered the phone after it had been ringing for a while.

“Is this Lyla Smith?” asked the operator on the other side.

“Yes, who’s asking?”

“Your mother Cindy has been in a terrible accident, you need to meet us at the Seattle Medical Center as soon as possible.”

The operator said in a steady stern voice.

Lyla could feel her heart drop into her stomach as she hung up the phone. With shaky hands she grabbed her dark blue rain jacket and rushed out the door leaving it wide open.

The hospital lights blinded Lyla as she ran down the white hallway. She held her breath as she dodged around carts and nurses till she got to the front desk. With tears streaming down her face Lyle struggled to get out a sentence, “My mom she's here, I need to see her.”

“She was just admitted to the emergency room in critical condition. I’m afraid you cannot see her until she is out of surgery.”

For 4 and a half hours Lyla’s wondered whether she would ever see her mom again. She regretted every harsh thing she had ever said to her. Every conversation, every car ride, every hug, she had taken for granted and she would do anything to know that their would be more of those things in the future.
