The sound was like nails on a chalkboard. I couldn't bear to see any more. I kept looking away, hoping it wouldn't cause me pain, but I knew it already had. She was the one hurting the most. There was nothing I could do to help her. It was all her fault, now we are here stuck with it. I decided to open my eyes, that was a mistake. Pain is a word, but I can feel it and now have seen it.

The room was quiet. You could hear a pin drop. She passed me the plate of warm pancakes. I couldn’t look at her. She sat there silently eating. All you could hear was her teeth grinding. My hand had dried blood on it from the night before. I turned around and saw his shoes at the back door. That’s when I got up and walked out.

I looked to see if anyone was around, but the only thing I could see was this run down house and what looked to be an empty car. As I approached the car I felt my body start to freeze. I didn’t want to go any closer. That moment I knew what I saw could never be unseen. I dropped to the ground.
