ECOD Report | EQUINE
African horse sickness
AHS reporting and visualization is one of the main benefits of the ECOD system, since this information is used for
movement control within the country, as well as establishing AHS risk profiles for State Vet areas throughout the
country. June through December is generally mild in terms of AHS cases, and of the 29 cases, most were the final
cases of the 2017/2018 AHS season in June. Some early 2018/2019 AHS cases have been reported from the Free
State, Gauteng, KZN and the Eastern Cape.
African horse sickness in this report is established by laboratory confirmed cases reported by Veterinarians. Veterinarians can submit clinical, lab unconfirmed
cases on the ECOD system, however, these are not included here.
These data are based on private veterinarian reporting and supplemented with laboratory reports where available. The purpose of this report is to provide
veterinarians with knowledge of the diseases in their respective areas. This does not remove the requirement of reporting by private veterinarians to the State
with regards to Controlled and Notifiable Animal Diseases. Total count data should also not be used as a general interpretation of the status of disease within
South Africa given the focussed scope and source of information making up this report. In this regard clinical cases that might be reported to the State but is
not made known to the Private vets would not be depicted.
NOTE: This is NOT a South African Government report
