Editorial
Welcome to the first edition of the ehu for 2019. We again have a selection of abstracts which we reproduce with
kind permission of the Equine Veterinary Journal. The collaboration with BEVA and the Beva affiliate membership
for SAEVA members remains an invaluable and inexpensive source of CPD. Members can view sample webinars
on the eBeva website.
The Equine disease quarterly produced by the University of Kentucky gives us a useful overview of some of the
challenges our veterinary colleagues around the world face. Of interest in this edition is the continued reporting
of Equine Influenza in the Uk and Europe. We have not seen EI in South African for a number of years but this is
a timely reminder of the importance of maintaining a high level of vaccination and not to forget that EI should be
on our radar in an outbreak of respiratory disease.
It’s also good to see that South Africa is well represented in disease reporting on the EDQ.
On that theme John Grewar and Camilla Weyer continue to perform important work on equine disease reporting
through the ECOD portal and they have kindly supplied us with an overview of the equine diseases reported in
South Africa in the second half of 2018. We are again reminded of the importance of private practitioners aiding
in the collating of this information.
Our CPD article for this edition is kindly supplied by Dr. Caryn Rademeyer. Equine Tetanus is another disease
which many of us will be unfamiliar with however we need to aware that it remains a possibility and again the
importance of educating clients on the importance of vaccination.
Thanks again to Heinrich and Madaleen at Vetlink for putting this publication together and I hope to catch up
with many of you at the Congress.
