Equine Disease Reporting | EQUINE
Equine Encephalosis
Equine encephalosis was the second most reported
disease on the system between Jan and May 2018. This
is primarily as a result of excellent reporting from the
practices in the eThekwini municipality(tKZN) who
reported 36 cases during this period of review.
One of the future outcomes of the ECOD system
could be to provide information that allows for an
evaluation of the incidence of EEV versus AHS as both
diseases have a similar epidemiology. Current reporting
probably provides data that is too sparse for this at the
moment but building up a body of data over a few
seasons may be very useful.
Piroplasmosis
Reporting of non- notifiable, non -controlled diseases
like Piroplasmosis on ECOD provides very useful
information as reporting of these diseases is limited to
industry based reporting like ECOD as well as formal
research programs by academic institutes.
In general, disease reporting on ECOD was poor
for the Jan - May 2018 period. Only 16 individuals
and practises logged onto the system and reported
diseases. The reporting from the eThekwini region
demonstrates the value and potential of regular
reporting. If this level of reporting could occur from
across the country with information on the extent
and epidemiology of diseases like Piroplasmosis, then
the ability to look at risk profiling for these diseases
would be significantly boosted.
