2 WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2017 Vox pop Was furore over recent appointments in NNPC justified? T T hE furore is justified. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation is a parastatal within the Ministry of Petroleum and as you know, oil has for a long time remained the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy. This is something we draw from the South-South and South Eastern part of Nigeria and for you to make managerial appointments without involving those who own this resource, I think it is greatly unfair. I think their outcry is justifiable. This attitude of the government of the day to want to marginalise certain parts of the country, especially the oil rich areas, is something that is worrisome. This points to the fact that, if nothing is done to remedy the situation, the unrest and vandalising of oil facilities in that part of the country will continue. We are talking about restoring peace to the Niger Delta. At a time we are trying to restore normalcy and pacify militants in the Niger Delta, you are also trying to show them that they are nobody. I think this is unfair to the South-East and South-South. I am from the North; we have yet to begin oil production, it is only fair to give oil producing areas a fair share of their God-given resources in terms of appointments, revenue sharing, infrastructural development as well as ensuring that their voices are heard in national discourse. I want to appeal to the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to do something urgent to β€’Prof. Abubakar Suleiman (A former Minister of National Planning) remedy this situation and restore justice to the South-East, South-South and other parts of the country who are being marginalised in the recruitment and promotion process; the earlier we do that, the better for this country. President Buhari can make adjustments and look at other aspects of the polity where people are marginalised while the injustice meted out to some sections of this country needs to be addressed immediately. This is the only way for peace to reign. β€’ Prof. Femi Otubanjo, (A Lagos-based public affairs analyst) O F course it is. Some measures of equity should apply at every turn. Unfortunately, that has not been the case under President Muhammadu Buhari. A T hOSE behind that misinformation are mischief makers who want to further polarise Nigerians to achieve their political goals. What they deliberately did was to select a few names and positions out of a long list and present them as the whole. If you take time to go through the staff list of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, you will see that every part of this country is situation where you appoint 10 people from a single region to the exclusion of other regions cannot be fair. he cannot convince us that those he appointed are more competent than others. I think that the President needs to look at his appointments because they have been too lopsided. We are already battling with the fact that nearly all the security heads in Nigeria are from the north and people are unhappy about that because there are so many indications of sectional lopsidedness. Nigeria cannot have peace under this kind of situation. That is why the clamour for restructuring is getting louder. When you stimulate anger, people react in different ways. Your appointments must be balanced. You must have a sense of balance; there must be a modicum of sensitivity to the religious diversity of this country. When you are balanced in your appointments, people will not be as agitated as they are now, but when you exclude some regions, it becomes a problem. However, competent those people from the north are, it is not enough not to have people from the South-East. I quite agree with those who are agitated because it is a continuation of a trend that is not good for the country. adequately represented at all levels, be it management or down the ladder. Nigerian youths should begin to ask questions and demand accountability from those given public trust. What those behind that false presentation are trying to do is to divert attention from the real issues affecting the ordinary Nigerian. Another election cycle is by the corner and some people want to start their usual antics of pitting Nigerians against one another. hE furore is necessary; it is in order given the structure of Nigeria. The Federal Government should not be speaking from both sides of the mouth. The Federal Government talks about federal character, but does the present appointment reflect that? This is the first question we need to ask. If there is nothing like federal character in terms of appointments at the federal level, I will be talking about the qualifications of these individuals.
