As the runner-up in HAC ’ s Lifestyle Challenge , Susan won her share of incredible prizes , from a VIP massage membership to free Personal Training sessions with her HAC Personal Trainer Dewey Lightcap . . . and more ! But the biggest reward of all for her wasn ’ t the massages or even the 27-inches lost ( did we mention that ?!). No , Susan ’ s biggest take-away from the challenge can only be summed up in one word : balance .
What was it that led you to take the Lifestyle Challenge ? In December of 2015 , I had a total knee replacement because the pain in my left knee became too severe to tolerate . A torn ACL and meniscus injury from high school had progressed and deteriorated the joint so much that every step was uncomfortable , and working out was downright painful . Just as the information came out on the challenge , I was completing physical therapy at Elite which is on-site at HAC . My Physical Therapist , Rudy , and I discussed me signing up with a personal trainer because it would help me continue my focus on rehabilitating the knee and result in some much needed weight loss . The challenge came out at the perfect time and I knew it would help me .
Every morning I made a smoothie with kale or spinach and fruit . I drank a lot of water and exercised five days a week – even if all I did was 30 minutes on the stationary bike .
My plan was to lose one pound a week while building up my core strength and also focusing on the muscles in my legs . My goal was to gain balance and strength so that I could return to a fun and safe workout routine which includes my favorite HAC classes - Cycle , Bike 2 Mat , Body Pump , Kettlebells , and HAC TKO . I knew that having the accountability of getting on the scale every week would help me get on a path to better health and stay on track .
Was there anything significant in your life – major realizations , experiences , etc . – that brought you to this point ? During my physical therapy I realized that I would never be able to push myself like someone else would . And I thought the best way to get in shape , especially after my surgery , was if someone were to help me .
