Exercise Equipment:
What to Use?
by HAC Master Personal Trainer, Ken Roberts
Okay – time to fess up; I told a lot of you that
I am 39 years old. Some of you pretended to
believe it. I am 80 years old, and I don’t feel it,
thanks to exercising at HAC.
MACHINES
Machines ride up and down on a
track, which helps to keep you in
perfect form.
One thing that has helped me feel great at this age
is strength training, whether that’s with machines,
free weights, or cables. Below I’ll go into the key
differences among the three and demonstrate four
great moves for building strength with cables.
FREE WEIGHTS
When exercising with free weights,
your muscles must compensate for
the imbalance that dumbbells create,
which in turn makes you stronger.
CABLES
Cables are a more functional form
of exercise. Not only do they create
good posture, but standing exercises
carry over to outside activities, such
as moving a refrigerator or playing
golf or tennis.

STANDING CHEST PRESS
Keep your head and your chest
up. Maintaining good posture,
push handles out and then back
to chest. Elbows should go only
slightly behind your shoulders.
