zumba and line dancing classes,
and pickle ball.
With Sydney’s help, Teena
has surpassed her initial goal
of just being comfortable in
water past her chest. She can
now swim three-quarters of the
length of the pool freestyle, roll
onto her back for an extended
breath, and then roll back
onto her stomach to complete
the length. She easily does
lengths of the pool backstroke,
treads water, and floats. Having
Sydney alongside her instilled
confidence in Teena to keep
pushing forward. Currently, she
is working toward swimming
the full distance of the pool
freestyle without having to turn
on her back or having a fear of
reaching the deep end without
Sydney there.
Teena’s grandchildren
serve as a major motivation
to continue swimming. Her
youngest grandkids, Ashleigh
(age 6) and James (age 9), are
both on swim teams at a local
club. Her older grandkids also
joined swim
clubs and
worked as
lifeguards.

Having the advantage of
swim lessons allows Teena to
feel much safer and relaxed
in the water. If a bad situation
were to arise unexpectedly, she
is now certain she can protect
herself by floating and swimming
to safety.
Maintaining health is another
important reason why she
continues
swimming.

to someone facing a similar
situation as hers, she replied,
“Don’t let fear or intimidation
stop you from doing what you
want – you’re only missing
out if you do.” This inspiring
quote completely embodies
Teena’s enthusiastic, driven
personality that shined through
when speaking with her. “With
patience and hard work, anyone
can accomplish what they want,”
she says.
Be sure to say hi to Teena if
you happen to run into her at
the club. By taking just a few
moments to get to know her,
you too, will quickly admire her
strong, charismatic nature.
