COVER STORY
by Rachel Mayan
Paige Burchfield began gaining weight slowly after high school. The first
20-30 pounds crept on over the course of a few years, but the last 35 came
in just six short months and brought with them dissatisfaction and low
self-esteem. It wasn’t until she found herself over 200 pounds
that she realized she needed to change.

Paige was always active growing up – she
was a cheerleader. The sport had afford-
ed her a baseline of activity along with a
fast-paced metabolism, and she stayed at a
steady weight throughout high school. After
graduating, she began working at a daycare,
which kept her active and running around,
and she enrolled in school full-time. Her
schedule was jam-packed, but she made an
effort to workout.
“I had a personal trainer at Retro Fitness,”
she recalls. “He was really nice, I liked him,
but . . . it was very impersonal. You go, you
get your 30 minutes, and you don’t talk to
them until the next time when you schedule
another 30 minutes.” When that trainer was
let go, Paige was paired with another trainer
but didn’t have a great connection, so she
stopped training.
