GROUP FITNESS HIGHLIGHT: Les Mills BodyPump ® RESISTANCE TRAINING “Shoulders down and back, chest lifted, abs braced, heels under hips, music please.” If you take BodyPump ® , these cues are familiar. If you don’t, now is the time to start! by Susan Storm & Lisa Maguire What is BodyPump®? It’s a fun, energizing, results-driven cardio and resistance training workout like no other. No wonder BodyPump®, Les Mills International’s flagship program, has been around for a quarter of a century and was the first to be released outside of New Zealand where Les Mills’s programs originate. Movements set to ten motivating music tracks safely and scientifically work the major muscle groups to provide muscle tone, muscle definition, and functional strength, all while you increase lean muscle mass. By the end of an average class, you will have performed over 130 squats and 85 bicep curls, just to mention two of the muscle groups worked. As a bonus, you’ll burn between 500-700 calories! Using relatively light weights and performing high repetitions is the keystone of BodyPump®; it’s what Les Mills calls the “rep effect.” The focus is on correct form and proper weight selection for each participant. The company was founded by the son of four-time New Zealand track and field Olympian, Les Mills Sr. After opening his own fitness clubs in New Zealand, his son saw the need for high-energy group fitness classes to motivate and train his members. Forty years later, Les Mill’s programs are in 100 countries, 19,500 clubs, with over 130,000 instructors worldwide. Les Mills is on the cutting edge of fitness, incorporating current exercise physiology theories to make a difference in your fitness level. Much of their scientific testing happens locally at Penn State University, where they partner with the exercise physiology department. If you haven’t tried BodyPump®, come join us. There are currently 19 classes a week on our Group Fitness Schedule, and especially great for those new to “Pump,” we’re having Technique Training classes on January 13 th and January 21 st . Learn how to get fit safely and effectively while having a good time. BODY PUMP BODY PUMP enhance magazine | JANUARY 2018 17
