BUZZ ROBOTICS vs. THE WORLD From April 18 th to 22 nd , Enfield Buzz Robotics competed in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) World Championships in Houston, Texas. This is an annual competition which requires each team to qualify to attend by accumulating points during 6 weeks of competitions prior to World Championship. The championships support hundreds of teams from over 20 countries. Buzz qualified this year after ranking 14 th in New England. In Houston, all teams who qualified were divided in 6 divisions where each engaged in a mini competition, which resembled the local and district competitions of the previous 6 weeks. The winners of these 6 divisions then competed in a transitional competition to narrow the group of teams down to two remaining teams. These teams then competed in the final level, named Einstein. This year at Worlds, Buzz Robotics concluded a successful year with a climactic finish. Competing in the Carver division, Buzz ended the preliminary round ranked 23 rd and was chosen by Pennsylvania team Miss Daisy to work together in an alliance along with Colorado team The Hi- Fives and Florida team Minotaur during the playoffs. The alliance worked well together- defeating the 2 nd and 3 rd alliances- and was able to make it to the finals of the Carver division. Unfortunately, Buzz suffered a mechanical failure at this level and was unable to further compete. Shortly after, the alliance was defeated by the 1 st alliance. Nonetheless, Buzz Robotics and their fellow 6 th alliance members finished the World Championships ranked 2 nd in their division, an outstanding achievement for all four teams! The past year of Buzz has been a fast-paced adventure for all students and mentors and we all look forward to the next excitement-filled season. By- Laura Mason, Grade 11
