Materials and Methods: The research was conducted as an semi-experimental study to find a relationship between the two groups. It was conducted between 25 April and 27 May 2016 in the nursing department of a state university. The sample of the study was voluntarily participated first year nursing students (n:105) who took Nursing Principles lesson and who was for the first time in clinical practice and third year nursing students (n:19) who was voluntarily participated to clinical practice as a mentor with first year students for Management in Nursing lesson. The permission from the related institution and approval from the ethics committee were obtained. The data of the study were collected by the Personal Information Form and the Clinical Stress Questionnaire (CSQ). The mean, percentage distribution and the difference between two means was assessed by the difference significance test (t-test) and the t-test for dependent groups. Results: It was determined that 87.1% of the students were satisfied with the mentoring practice, 61.3% of them received help from the mentor to get the theoretical information, and 58.1% of them felt better by working with the mentor. The mean total clinical stress score of the students was 37.84 ± 8.48 before the clinical application and 34.61 ± 9.42 after the clinical application. And, the stress levels of the students after the clinical application were found to be significantly lower than before the clinical application. It was determined that the mean of the total score of the clinical stress levels of the students working with the mentor (31.06 ± 11.36) was statistically significantly lower than the mean of the total score of the clinical stress levels of the students who did not work with the mentor (35.90 ± 10.58). Conclusion: It was determined that working with the mentor was effective in reducing the clinical stress levels of the nursing students who were for the first time in clinical practice.
