LEADERSHIP OUTSIDE OF THE HOSPITAL : BUILDING COMPETENCIES FOR NURSE LEADERS ACROSS THE CARE CONTINUUM
In early 2017 , the American Hospital Association ( AHA ) published their newest report The Imperative for Strategic Workforce Planning and Development : Challenges and Opportunities . This report highlights key challenges in USA workforce planning to include rural hospitals , behavioral health programs , and other care settings that transcend our traditional focus in acute care hospitals . A critical section of the report speaks to the need for health care leaders who can train the workforce to new care models , foster innovative thinking to ensure optimal safety and quality outcomes for patients , and strategically plan for value based care that crosses the care continuum . The American Organization for Nurse Executives ( AONE ) is the professional nursing organization for nursing leaders and is a subsidiary of the AHA . In 2015 , anticipating this new direction the AONE published their Nurse Executive Competencies for Post-Acute Care providers . Building on the original AONE Nurse Executive Competencies , these competencies address the unique needs of the Nurse Executive managing across the care continuum to include palliative care , home health and hospice , or ambulatory practices . In addition , these competencies focus on the nurse leader ' s role in population health management , addressing the competencies needed to coordinate services for acute episodes of care through chronic illness management . The focus of this presentation will be to present the AONE Nurse Executive Competencies for Post-Acute Care , demonstrating the crosswalk to the original Nurse Executive Competencies but importantly highlighting the unique competency needs of the nurse leader outside of the traditional hospital setting .
