ERGOMED plc Oreškovićeva 20 HR [email protected] BEHIND THE CURTAIN: MANAGER VS LEADER The difference between the managers and the leader which was designed by Warren Bennis was used as the base for this pilot project. The aim was to identify what makes dominant manager or leader characteristics The online non-validated questionnaire was sent by e-mail. The questionnaire had 20 questions, 10 referring to manager´s attributes and 10 to leader´s characteristics. The five-level Likert scale was offered to answer the questions. The response was 37%, with 75 nursed replying. As expected, 96% were female, out of which 47,3% were BsN and 49% MN. More than 52,1% had 30 years of work experience and 34,2% of were between 20 to 30 years old. The results are the following: 86,66% strongly agree that trust inspires, 60,81% believe in doing the right things and 50,66% think it is important to create values at work, while 56% of the them presume that focus has to be on people. As far as the traditional hierarchy in the health care system is concerned, 53,33% believe that administrative system is important and 51,35% believe in doing things right. The results suggest that 84,39 % of the participants in total have leader´s characteristic, while 69,46% of them exhibit manager's traits. In order to engage staff in providing the best service to patients, head nurses have to be leaders and lead the staff to achieve more than it is thought possible. Implication for nursing Continuous research on this topic and further development could contribute to nurses' performance and consequently patient outcomes.
