Zvonimir Kralj student University of Applied Health Sciences Mlinarska 38, Zagreb HR [email protected] THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EXPECTATIONS AND REALITY Ideas and images we create as students of our future work and nursing primarily come from university textbooks, professional literature, monographs and historical accounts of our predecessor. The pictures of nurses in these sources are drastically different from what students encounter in professional practices, volunteering or through work. Many students get lost in the discrepancy between the idea of nursing and its real face. Exalted and transcendental idea of nursing conflicts with the seemingly profane and everyday situations. Terms from textbooks like human dignity and moral behaviour that constantly surround us during studies are difficult to translate into real-life situations and daily practice and can be very disorienting and discouraging to inexperienced students. How, then, to socialize students so that this transition does not destroy their motivation and passion? How can they be shown that transcendental component of nursing comes from what is from their perspective mundane and ordinary?
