Susan Osborne CBE Miss Safe Staffing Alliance, UK 10, Sewdley Street GB [email protected] SAFE STAFFING AND THE VALUE OF NURSES AND NURSING Past workforce trends in the UK indicate political intervention and tinkering with nurse and midwife workforce budgets is resulting in Nurses and Nursing being de- valued. Presently, they are being forced to work with unsafe staffing levels, being substituted by unregistered nurses and midwives, which compromises their care and increases patient harm. Urgent investment is required to stabilise the nursing and midwifery workforce and enable professionals to provide safe patient care, which will save money due to efficiencies and more effective working practices. This is an international issue and the future can only be solved by a global social movement to increase the numbers of registered nurses and midwives to a safe staffing level.
