Introduction
About 2 Kg of the as-received 1050 Al alloy and
Controlled amounts (Si, Cu, Mg, Fe) were melted at
~740℃.

The pouring temperature was about 735℃.

A cast iron ring mold with the design presented in
Figure 1 was used in this study.
The corresponding chemical compositions of the
alloys are presented in table 1.

In order to apply the most sever hot tearing
situation, the lowest possible mold temperature
(based on flowability of the alloys) was selected for
each alloy.

test) were carried out for each alloy.

Hot Tearing
Hot Tearing is an irreversible failure (crack), occurs in the semisolid state during
solidification; (it is because of inadequate compensation of solidification shrinkage by
melt flow in the presence of thermal stresses).
