I Just Want to Have Funds In the last issue of Emerge I let you in on my journey of becoming a business owner. I am so proud to write that my journey continues. Since making the decision to become a business owner I have learned so much about myself and what it takes to maintain a business. Follow my journey. Let me first begin by stating how fortunate I am to have people in my life that have taken an interest in my success. Learning the ropes of owning a business is so much easier when you have people to provide you with advice and firsthand experience of the areas you need to focus your time and energy. Not too long ago I was having a conversation with one of my mentors. We talked about how my businesses were going and what steps I needed to take to get to the next level. I remember my mentor asking me what I wanted to be when I was older. With no hesitation I replied, “When I get older I want to be wealthy”. My mentor laughed and asked me, “Well, what is it that you want to do when you get older” ? I responded, “Whatever I want”! MY TWO CENT$ With DaShana K. From the look on my mentor’s face I could tell he was not taking my answers seriously. I asked him if he wanted me to explain and he said please do. I am a firm believer that life is simple, but we as people trying to find our way make it complex. I have found that what works for me is making general goals and then figuring out the specifics needed to reach the goal. My main goal is to live a life that I do not need to vacation from. In order to do that I figured out that I need to be wealthy. My mentor questioned why I needed to be wealthy instead of rich. I told him because rich people have money and wealthy people have time. In my opinion it is a difference in mindset. I started my own business for one reason and one reason only. I want to be wealthy. I know I cannot become wealthy if I continue to work for other people. You will never hear me say that I started my own business for any other reason. A lot of people like to say that they started their own business because they want freedom of their time. When I hear this I cannot help but laugh. Most business owners can identify with me when I say that owning a business can have a reverse effect. I do not have freedom of time, at least not yet. When you work for someone else you will typically work forty-hour weeks and have your weekends off. You can equate having your own business to always being on call. Phone calls and e-mails do not stop just because it is the weekend. There is always work to be done. Like I said, I aspire to live a life I do not need a vacation from. I realize that in the beginning it is going to require a lot of hard work and sacrifices, but what are a few sacrifices if you can live the life you want to live? I think it is totally worth it! I just want to be wealthy, having enough funds that will allow me to do whatever I want whenever I want to do it. This is just an account of what I have learned on my journey. Everyone starts a business for various reasons. Whatever your reasons make it work for you. But that’s just my two cents! I know some people who were once rich and now they do not have two pennies to rub together. Wealthy people, in my opinion, are different. Wealthy people can go out and buy whatever they want, but they tend to evaluate their purchases even before making it. Wealthy people have figured out how to make money and in turn how to make their money work hard for them. This, to me, is why I have not seen many wealthy people who have been wealthy one year and broke the next. emerge | 3
