Alfons Mucha ( 1860-1939 )
Alfons Mucha was a Czech Art Nouveau painter , best known for his original style . Even though he was born in Austria-Hungary , he is associated with Paris and New York City , where he has lived and worked . He is a Nazi victim as he was imprisoned in 1939 by them . Shortly after that he was released , but during his prison sentence he got a lung infection .
His masterpiece is called The Slav Epic , a series of 20 big paintings describing history of Czechs , Slavs in general . Appreciation of his work came long after his death . Nowadays Ivan Lendl , former no . 1 tennis player , has one of the biggest collections of Mucha ’ s paintings .
