Arguably the greatest night in the history of Elmore Football Club – and certainly one of the most memorable – took place at St James’ Park, Exeter, on April 14, 1972, when Elmore met the powerful Dawlish Town in the East Devon Senior Cup final – a match in which virtually no one gave Elmore a chance. Some of the Dawlish players were so deflated they did not even bother to collect their losers medals as the Elmore players and fans alike celebrated a momentous cup victory. Certainly a confident Dawlish outfit believed they had it all sewn up as they had arranged an open top double-decker bus to take their ‘triumphant team’ back to parade the cup around Dawlish. The officials seemed to think so as well as the Dawlish colours had already been put on the cup! However, Elmore’s never-say-die attitude brought about a tremendous comeback.
