It ’ s tongue and cheek , really . It ’ s a matter of not taking ourselves too seriously .
Jon and Tilian seem to be working together quite well but have there ever been problems between the two of them arguing whether to use clean singing or screaming in a specific part ?
W : Not really . I think it just kind of comes down to the flow and making sure everything works correctly in the studio . That ’ s also where a lot of stuff comes together really quick so nobody is trying to push too hard . It ’ s more like : “ Let ’ s make this work and do what ’ s best for the songs .”
I think it ’ s a good energy between the two of them and the producer and everybody just being on the same page with things like “ this should be this or that ” and that will only change if somebody comes up with something super tight that ’ s not expected and then we ’ ll start moving things around to see how it fits into the song but usually it works out well between them .
The album cover for “ Mothership ” shows a big infinity sign . Why did you choose this as the shape of the mother ship on the cover considering it ’ s a very commonly used sign ?
W : First of all it ’ s our eighth album so we were digging for something to incorporate that and then thought it would be cool to flip it over into the infinity symbol .
For the last three albums and “ Happiness ” we came up with a concept for the cover and then gave it to our artist rather than using the stuff that he already had .
The idea for this album was people sort of worshipping this huge “ Infinity Ship ” within this mountain scape and he came back to us with that and we were pretty stoked . Initially we wanted another baroque ship like the Death Star is but he just did such a cool ass job with that
Now to cap it off : Have you got any tips or advice for young musicians who are just starting out in terms of touring , being in a band or anything in general ?
W : Keep your taste varied . Don ’ t just listen to one thing because there ’ s a lot of bands who just try to rip off the bands that they like and make sure to focus on the music . Write good songs and try to expand yourself as an artist . That ’ s how you get peoples attention and not by trying to put on a show or dressing a certain way or pulling off certain moves during a set . That ’ s all the icing on the cake but if your cake is bad it ’ s not gonna taste good , you know . You gotta have that base of solid music and performance and if that ’ s not there everything else becomes kind of worthless . Keep moving forward !
