Until that time, through the dozen-plus years I'd practiced yoga and meditation, I'd never considered them as a form of spirituality: they were tools to help manage my mind, body and emotions.

As I studied energy movement - Reiki, healing crystals, color and sound, the elements and cardinal directions, Tarot and other divination tools, the meridians and chakras of the body, cycles and seasons - I began to incorporate a different kind of focus into my yoga practice.

I started beginning every session by envisioning pure white healing light surrounding me, filling my body, moving freely through it. As I stood in Mountain Pose each morning, I'd see myself rooted deeply into the earth through my feet. Moving into a cycle of Sun Salutes, I'd imagine all the stagnant energy of a lifetime, breaking up, allowing light to shine into the darkest places in my body and my mind.
