SMART HEATING

THE ART OF SMART

With smart heating controls taking the market by storm , there is an opportunity for forward thinking electricians to paint a new picture of the profession under the smart banner . Andy Mansfield at Honeywell leads the way .

It seems that labelling a product ‘ smart ’ makes it the new must have . So in a climate where trends seem to be here today , gone tomorrow , electricians could be forgiven for assuming the same thing will happen to smart heating controls . But when it comes to the heating controls market , nothing could be further from the truth . Compared to 2014 figures , analysts predict the number of smart homes in the UK to have doubled by 2019 to 7.7 million . While smart

home systems can include flashy automated entertainment , there is equal demand for products that can pay dividends in the form of energy savings .

Enter smart heating controls , which are an affordable , accessible and convenient method to better control comfort levels , reducing energy bills in the process .
Smart controls are becoming ever more attractive to the
consumer , but the consumer continues to rely on the professional for advice and installation . This provides the ideal opportunity for electricians , who are best placed to offer advice and fit smart controls for a wealth of new and existing customers .
It ’ s good news then that electricians can expect to break into the field with relative ease – but before taking practical action , it is first worth understanding what qualifies as a smart heating control .
Most people assume that if a product is Internet enabled it is smart . But when it comes to heating controls , ‘ smart ’ also refers to a thermostat ’ s ability to learn through either Time Proportional Integral Control ( TPI ) or OpenTherm technology .
TPI uses past information to alter the on / off pattern , varying the length of heating periods to maintain the temperature set point for longer . It makes sure the boiler fires for the shortest time to reach and maintain the desired temperature .
