RACE FOR LIFE
FireAngel has teamed up with Humberside Fire & Rescue Service ( HFRS ) to provide support to a special school in Hull as it took part in Project Blyth . The event saw local students and employers work together to design and build single seat electric cars , which then competed in a race held at the KCOM Stadium , the home of Hull City and Hull FC .
The home safety brand constructed a large custom made FireAngel smoke alarm that was mounted on the back of an electric car made by Humberside FRS and ten students aged between 14 -18 from Ganton School , which caters for pupils who suffer from severe or complex learning difficulties , took part in the race . The alarm was designed with the aim of encouraging people to check their smoke alarms whilst also reiterating the Humberside FRS message of fire safety .
Project Blyth , run by the Greenpower Education Trust , saw 33 teams take part in a 70 lap race around the stadium , with the team from Ganton School finishing in a respectable 26th position . The aim was to provide young people with an exciting and real life engineering project that will help inspire an interest in science , technology , engineering and mathematics ( STEM ) subjects .

WARM WELCOME
When Dexter , Argentina ’ s largest sport retailer , required a complete lighting solution for its Buenos Aires store , it was imperative that the chosen lighting would illuminate merchandise and create a welcoming experience for customers .
Working with distributor Artelum , Megaman ’ s energy efficient LEDs were specified to fulfil the performance and aesthetic requirements . Based on the success of the project , Megaman ’ s lighting solutions will now be rolled out across all branches of Dexter in Argentina .
To enhance the merchandise on display , Megaman ’ s 10.5W PAR30s LEDs were installed in the track fixtures . Due to its innovative diffuser glass design , the PAR30s is able to deliver even light distribution at a luminous intensity of 850cd , helping to bring the products and displays to life .
As part of the retrofit , the team at Dexter also required a custom-built lighting fixture . Created by Artelum , the fixture comprises nine dimmable 15W GU10 AR111 LEDs , which were selected for their 24 ° beam angle and low energy consumption . Due to Megaman ’ s patented Thermal Conductive Highway , the AR111 LEDs allow less heat to be emitted whilst still holding its colour temperature . As such , GU10 LEDs last over 12 times longer than the halogen equivalent , providing an annual saving of up to 80 per cent .

ON THE RIGHT TRACK
ABB has won a $ 20 million contract from Network Rail to provide a trackside power electronics solution for new high speed electric trains .
The UK ’ s main rail link between London and Edinburgh is the East Coast Mainline ( ECML ). Network Rail , which owns and operates the rail infrastructure , is preparing for the introduction of the new 125 mph Hitachi InterCity Express Trains , which are expected to start passenger services from 2018 .
The new trains are capable of running on both diesel and electric power . However , one section , near Doncaster , needs additional traction power for both the main track and Hitachi ’ s new state-of-the-art depot that will serve the new rolling stock . To run on electricity , these trains will need around three times more power than is currently provided by the existing supply . A conventional solution is to construct a new high voltage grid connection , which can be costly and takes time to install .
Instead , ABB has developed a Static Frequency Converter ( SFC ) solution that will adapt the feed from the existing Northern Powergrid local distribution network , at an estimated total cost saving of 60 % compared with building a new high voltage grid connection .
ABB will deliver the complete SFC solution for Network Rail including the power electronics , transformers , switchgear and cabling . The contract was awarded in the second quarter of 2017 .

NOT JUST FOR SHOW
Following Volvo ’ s recent announcement that all of its new cars , launched from 2019 onwards , will be partial ( PHEV ) or full electric vehicles ( EVs ) the company has installed 50 Rolec WallPod EV charging points at its showrooms .
These bespoke blue and cream WallPod Mode 3 fast charging units have been installed in the showrooms to promote safe and reliable home charging solutions to Volvo customers .
WallPod was chosen by Volvo due to its adaptability , reliability and the fact that it is one of the very few charging units in the world that has been certified by the British Standards Institute ( BSI ) as compliant and safe to use in and around the home .
WallPod charging points have also been tested and certified by many of the world ’ s leading EV manufacturers , including Renault , Nissan , Hyundai and Mitsubishi .

HOLD THE DOOR
Geofire has been awarded a ten year agreement to supply and install its Salamander range of fire door holders and closers into one of the largest hospital trusts in the UK .
The agreement will see the trusted system installed across the estate to legally hold open fire doors , closing the doors in the event of a fire to protect residents and staff .
Geofire was one of two companies in the industry to have its products put to the test by the trust ’ s fire safety officer . After careful consideration , the radio-controlled Salamander products were voted unanimously as the best / most appropriate by the trust ’ s expert panel .
Each Salamander device connects wirelessly to a mains-powered controller unit , which is easily connected to the existing fire alarm system . The system is suitable for a BS7273-4 critical actuation ( category A ) installation to ensure that fire doors will safely close in the event of a fault or fire . One controller unit can manage up to 99 fire door closers or fire door holders .
Geofire ’ s Salamander range of radio controlled fire door safety products are all battery powered and wire free , thus saving time , installation costs and disruption to a building ’ s fabric or occupants . Both the fire door holder and closer are fitted to the top of the door ensuring a hygienic installation and minimising damage to the units .

LIGHTING THE WAY
Carbon8 floodlights have been used to meet the requirements for varying lumen packages and colour rendering indices at Glasgow Tigers Speedway track , Ashfield Stadium , Glasgow .
The track was in need of a major refurbishment and as well as a major overhaul of all facilities and a key part of this renovation would be the replacement of the existing , inadequate track lighting . The existing lighting , a mixture of 250W and 400W SON flood lights , was producing nowhere near the required light levels on the track to offer safe visibility for the riders along with great viewing for spectators .
After the site surveys were carried out , Carbon8 went away and produced a computerised light simulation for the speedway track and found the perfect solution , using 65 of its 200W Discus flood lights with a combination of three different lenses . There were many unusual factors to consider with this project , including avoiding any dangerous glare hitting the eyes of the riders .
The installation required each of the 65 fittings to be positioned with pin point accuracy , a task carried out by Glasgow based Universal Electrics . The combination of three different lens beam angles and the pin point positioning of each fitting has resulted in great light levels on the track will minimal light spillage .
