SMART THINKING FOR SAFER HOUSING

A member of the United Technologies Corporation , Kidde Safety is one of the world ’ s leading manufacturers of smoke , heat and carbon monoxide alarms . Kidde offers an extensive choice of alarm ranges , accessories and other safety products for all types of housing .

Professionally installed , hard-wired , interlinked smoke and heat alarms with reliable power back up should now be the norm for both existing and new housing . Meeting this demand cost effectively , the latest Firex range is exclusively manufactured and supplied by Kidde . It also offers much lower , maximum mains consumption , with substantial energy savings over previous models and significantly lower running costs . Based on current energy tariffs ( March 2016 average kWh cost from the UK ’ s top five suppliers , between £ 0.099 / kWh and £ 0.109 / kWh ), it costs less than £ 1 per year to operate a Firex alarm – a major attraction for owner-occupiers and tenants .

Firex features
Firex optical and ionisation smoke and heat alarms also now offer options for long-life lithium battery back up , alongside the usual loose battery and integral rechargeable battery versions , giving nine models in total . This innovation ensures reliable back up throughout the whole alarm life , without the need to change batteries . Other new Firex features include an Alarm Memory Function where a flashing LED continues after an alarm has been triggered to easily and quickly identify the source unit .
The three new optical alarms feature dust compensation and a bug screen to help minimise nuisance alarms . A surface mounting base allows simple installation , particularly for retrofitting with trunking or conduit , and a relay pattress can operate other devices – such as door closers , warning lights , horns and warden-call systems – when an alarm is triggered . A wired Remote Test and Hush accessory allows for system testing of interconnected alarms and to hush unwanted alarms from a single location .
Wireless interconnection is an ideal solution , using Kidde ’ s premium Slick range and its Wireless Alarm Base accessory .
Slick , wireless interconnection
Often , there are practical or aesthetic reasons to avoid disruptive interconnect cabling between alarms – particularly in occupied properties . Here , wireless interconnection is an ideal solution , using Kidde ’ s premium Slick range and its Wireless Alarm Base accessory . This simply replaces the standard base plate and is used to interconnect Slick smoke or heat alarms , with each alarm separately powered from a lighting circuit nearby . It can also be used with Kidde ’ s Remote Test & Hush switch to communicate with a Slick alarm that might otherwise be difficult to access . This is especially useful for older or disabled residents , or particularly high ceilings .
Kidde ’ s Slick range of fast-fit , mains with rechargeable back up , smoke and heat alarms are guaranteed for 10 years . With Slick , the separate base plate can be installed and its integral terminal block wired at first fix if appropriate . Then , near completion , the alarm simply slides onto the base plate hinge flap and locks into place by default , also making maintenance simpler .
Smart Interconnect
Both the Slick and Firex ranges can be interconnected with Kidde ’ s hardwired CO alarms using the unique ‘ Smart Interconnect ’ feature to create a comprehensive system for whole home protection . Crucially , the CO alarms have different , distinct alarm sounder patterns for carbon monoxide and fire , supported by different display messages on the digital model . So , without the need for any further operation of the system ( such as remote switches ), Smart Interconnect automatically alerts occupants of the specific hazard that confronts them .
This allows them to respond quickly , making the right choice from the very different alternative actions for either fire or the presence of carbon monoxide . In one application of Smart Interconnect , Kidde CO alarms in bedrooms can act as sounders for the smoke / heat alarm system , as well as alerting sleeping occupants of carbon monoxide . This solves the problem of limited audibility at the bedhead of landing-located smoke alarms resulting from sound-reducing doors and gives installers an opportunity to offer more products and increase turnover .
