ELECTRICIANS FIRST TO FINISH NEW INDUSTRY TRAINING SCHEME
Two newly qualified electricians have become the first operatives to successfully complete the new industry-wide TESP career progression scheme .
Former Royal Marine Luke Versfeld ( pictured ) of Dorset based PB Electrical , an ECA member firm and NICEIC registrant , is one of the first to complete the career progression initiative , along with electrician Reece Kirk . The career progression scheme is intended to upskill hundreds of existing electrical workers to qualify them to the industry standard of NVQ Level 3 and AM2 .
Luke Versfield stated , ‘ This represents an opportunity to further develop my career as an electrical engineer and I would recommend this course to any potential candidates looking to advance their careers within the electrical industry .’
Both individuals have received an ECS Gold Card in recognition of them meeting the industry standard , a year ’ s free individual membership of the professional engineering institution – the IET , and some cash awards and training subsidies for their efforts .
In the coming months the training aspect of the career progression project will be expanded beyond the initial pilot with JTL to the other training providers who have been licensed to deliver the JIB Mature Candidate Assessment , helping to boost the number of operatives taking part in the initiative .
SCOTTISH APPRENTICE DOES SKILLS COMPETITION DOUBLE
An electrical apprentice from Lockerbie has won two skills competitions in the space of 48 hours .
Steven Harper , 21 , who works for Derek Mitchell Electrical , came first in the Electrotechnical Modern Apprenticeship Competition ( eMAc ), Scotland ’ s premier electrotechnical skills competition and the Scottish heat of SkillElectric , the UK ’ s skills competition for apprentice electricians .
He won both competitions after completing two days of practical tests and tasks based on workplace scenarios faced by electricians , which were held at West College Scotland in Paisley .
Steven said , ‘ I ’ m so pleased to have won both eMAc and SkillElectric . It ’ s a tough two days as the competitions are very challenging , but it ’ s a testimony to the training I ’ ve had on site and at college that I was able to do so well .’
Steven now faces a wait to see if he has achieved a high enough total score at SkillElectric to win a place in the UK final in November . If successful , he will compete alongside seven other finalists to win the chance to represent the UK at the biennial WorldSkills event – the world ’ s largest skills competition – in Kazan in 2019 .
