NEW ERA

Hello , and welcome to the November issue of ECN . With my predecessor Michael Crane moving on to pastures new after six years at the helm of this leading title , I am stepping into the editor ’ s shoes after serving as assistant editor here and also as editor on ECN ’ s sister magazine , Data Centre News .

When I began here in 2010 I was still very fresh to the world of electrical contracting but in the time since it has been an industry I have got to know and love . It is constantly evolving and it ’ s a job to keep up with at times – having an apprentice electrician in the family will no doubt keep me on my toes !
We have a special feature this month on Home Automation and Intelligent Buildings . This is an industry which has the potential to open up a whole new avenue of work for electrical contractors . Once perhaps only thought of as rock star or footballer luxuries , smart technology is being pushed more and more into the social housing sector , while from a commercial point of view the benefits of smart buildings are becoming more and more evident both environmentally and economically . It presents a huge opportunity for electrical contractors and our special feature is packed with expert
comment on how to enhance your skill set to match the demands of smart technology , and the advantages it offers both to the installer and the end user .
The start of October saw the official launch of the Electrical Design and Install Expo ( ED & I Expo ) at the NEC , Birmingham . The ED & I Expo will take place in September 2017 , and is organised by All Things Media ( ATM ) – publisher of ECN – and supported by the Electrical Contractors ’ Association as the headline sponsor . It promises to be a huge event and will allow visitors to talk directly to manufacturers and distributors about their products and services and will encourage the sharing of ideas across many industry sectors . Further information can be found at www . edandiexpo . com .
Finally , those among you with a sharp eye will have noticed that this new era for ECN has brought with it some experimental changes . Our long running Product Link supplement has now been incorporated into the magazine in the ‘ Products ’ pages , allowing you to keep up to date with all the leading manufacturers ’ latest developments , plus we aim to deliver issues even more packed with in-depth expert articles .
We hope you like the the new look and will welcome any feedback , positive and negative .
