SELECT SUPPORTS PARLIAMENTARY PETITION TO MAKE IT A CRIMINAL OFFENCE FOR UNQUALIFIED PEOPLE TO WORK WITH ELECTRICITY SELECT is giving its support to a parliamentary petition which seeks to ‘ make working with electricity a criminal offence unless suitably qualifi ed ’.
The petition , which was launched by Kevin Hamilton , is not directly related to SELECT ’ s concurrent lobbying campaign to have the occupation ‘ electrician ’ made a regulated professional designation available only to those who are fully qualifi ed .
Should it attract 10,000 supporters , the government is honour-bound to respond to the petition ; should it receive 100,000 signatures the petition will be considered for debate in Parliament .
Newell McGuiness , SELECT ’ s managing director , said , ‘ Half the population of Europe lives in societies where “ electrician ” is a regulated profession , as it is in Commonwealth countries including Australia , New Zealand and Uganda .
‘ There are a great many benefi ts to society in regulating the profession of electrician , not least that of signifi cantly enhanced health and safety , but also including increased mobility of labour .
‘ We have no direct involvement in the petition which seeks to make it a criminal offence for unqualifi ed people to work with electricity but we support its general thrust in that it recognises that working with electricity can be , sometimes , a matter of life and death and only suitably qualifi ed people should be permitted to do so .’

Kew Electrical ’ s branch portfolio has expanded , with the recent purchase of Ship-Elec in Dartford , Kent . After many years of building Ship-Elec into a successful business , Bryan and Erika Meager sold 100 per cent of the shares in Ship-Elec to Kew , at the end of March . Geoff Kerly , director and Tim Standing , fi nance director and company secretary , have now become directors of Ship-Elec , which will continue to be branded as Ship Elec until June of this year .
A grandmother from Brighton will celebrate her 80th birthday in style after winning a trip to Las Vegas from Osram . Seventy-nine year old Elizabeth Allen won the holiday for two to the city of lights after buying an Osram LED bulb from the Tesco Hove Superstore and entering a free prize draw in February . Elizabeth will be fl own out to Nevada later this year for a six night holiday in a 4-star resort , courtesy of Osram and Tesco . She was awarded the prize at a Vegas style ceremony on Friday 8th April .
British heating and cooling equipment specialist Diffusion has been acquired by the Volution Group . Volution Group completed the acquisition at the end of December , with Diffusion joining some of the Group ’ s top brands , including Vent-Axia .

Fundraisers at St Michael ’ s Hospice in St Leonards-on-Sea , East Sussex , have sent a big thank you to local employer Marshall-Tuffl ex after its staff raised £ 305 to support the charity ’ s Phoenix Fund project . The hospice was badly damaged by fi re last summer and is currently being refurbished , with a £ 1m target set for the Phoenix Fund to help pay for the project .

The Rexel Banners team are taking on the 24 hour Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for the Electrical Industries Charity . The team facing this challenge will consist of representatives from Newey & Eyre , WF Senate , Wilts Electrical Wholesale and Timeguard . The 24 hour Challenge will take place on 9th July 2016 and will see the team scale the tallest peaks in Scotland , Wales , and England : Ben Nevis , Snowdon , and Scafell Pike .
