TRAINING

KNX Training Academy gives electricians a competitive edge
Alongside the divisions of Park Electrical Distributors sits My KNX Store which includes the only academy in the whole of the North of England to offer specialist training courses to enable people to become KNX integrators . Electrican Gary Warne attended a full one-week course that provided him with the skills to install , programme and commission a full KNX in a domestic environment .
Based in Hetton-le-Hole , County Durham , Gary enjoyed projects that were based around the concept of the ‘ smart home ’ and demonstrated his skill in this area while working on the highly desirable Ramside Developments in Durham . It was while he was working at Ramside that he made contact with Park Electrical Distributors , which was also providing lighting design .
Gary commented , ‘ I quickly decided to pursue this avenue as it would equip me with invaluable new skills around the latest smart homes technology and also give me the opportunity to work on larger projects . In a short space of time I have won high end housing projects and I am now also looking to open up the commercial market .’
Gary Warne , owner of Kenton House Electricals and Paul Kinghorn , general manager , KNX Building Technologies
LIA Certificate ready for industry ’ s future
The LIA Certificate has prepared thousands of lighting professionals for their career in the industry and has supported those wanting to specialise and advance in a range of different areas .
Ready for 2017 , the LIA has completed major investment in revising and redeveloping the LIA Certificate to meet the expectations and demands of the rapidly changing lighting industry . The new modular format LIA Certificate is structured as :
• Lighting fundamentals : Two days providing a basic grounding in the principles of light and lighting .
• Light Sources and Luminaires : A day designed to develop the delegate ’ s awareness of the types of light sources , including luminaires .
• Lighting Design : A further day to develop the delegate ’ s awareness of lighting design considerations .
Hylec-APL launches best practice programme and videos promoting electrical safety
Hylec-APL has announced it is launching a programme to encourage and support electrical wiring safety best practice in the industry . The company is working with industry veteran Tony Brogan who recently gave a live demonstration and advice at LuxLive , which was recorded as the first of a series of videos , aimed at the professional installer , electricians and electrical apprentices .
The Hylec HALO programme ( Hylec Academy Learning Organisation ) will also incorporate outreach to the UK ’ s colleges running electrical apprenticeships , where the company plans to offer the videos and other training aids , including product samples and Q & A sessions with Hylec staff , to lecturers training the next generation of commercial electricians .
Steve Robbins of Hylec-APL commented , ‘ We realised early this year that we wanted to be more involved in raising awareness of safety . We decided that if appentices are given the opportunity to see real life installations and hear from people in the industry , plus others who design the products they will be using in their professional life , this could add an extra dimension to their trainin g and enhance learning .’
The Certificate is completed with a lighting design project on which delegates will be mentored and assessed .
The course can be taken over five consecutive days or modules can be taken separately to suit individuals need , availability or experience .
Another positive benefit for the lighting community is the certificate offers the option to attend individual module ( s ) without having to commit to the full Certificate .
Dates for the course are now scheduled right the way through to July 2017 at the Academy ’ s campuses throughout the UK .
