CAMBRIDGE ELECTRONIC INDUSTRIES 12G-SDI BNC connectors maximise the speed and performance of Belden’s 4794R 4K co-axial cable. PICTURE THIS Ultra-high definition 4K video relies on high performance cable assemblies. Stephen Smith, managing director of Cambridge Electronic Industries, explains how the company’s latest connector and cable solutions achieve high frame rates over greater distances. D igital cinema and ultra-high definition TV applications depend on the reliable transmission of data; lots of data. In order to support these high transmission rates, specifiers need to invest in appropriate cable and connector solutions. Belden’s 4794R 4K coaxial cable, for example, is designed specifically for applications in this very demanding sector. Now Cambridge Electronic Industries, a specialist designer and manufacturer of vision coaxial connectors and cable assemblies, is introducing a series of new 12G-SDI BNC connectors, which maximise the speed and performance of Belden’s 4794R 4K coaxial cable for just such digital cinema and ultra-high definition TV applications. ‘12G-SDI carries four times the payload of 3G in one single channel.’ Enabling data rates These new connectors, released under the CoaxVision brand, are engineered to enable the data rates needed for high resolution, uncompressed digital video signals and high frame rates. To this end, they support several high definition standards including: SMPTE 2082-1, 12G-SDI 4K, D-Cinema, UHDTV1 and UHDTV2. 20 | August 2017 Cable & Cable Management Assemblies based on this technology can also offer significant space and weight savings. 12G-SDI carries four times the payload of 3G in one single channel, so 4794R 4K cable saves considerable weight and space compared to existing RG-6 solutions. Not only this, it is 30 to 50 per cent lighter than dual link RG-6 and 70 to 80 per cent lighter than quad link RG-6 solutions. Our connectors are built to match the data throughput and reliability of Belden 4794R cable, and together with the cables they provide a single channel that will achieve the very high frame rates required for ultra-high definition and 4K video productions, over greater distances. Connector options Of course, Belden’s 4794R 4K coaxial cable is not the only product available on the market in this sector. To ensure installers have all the options they need, Cambridge Electronic Industries has also developed 12G-SDI connectors and assemblies for Belden 4855R and Belden 4694R HDTV video cables, and Igus CF Koax1 flexible cables. The connectors are marketed under the division name Cambridge Connectors and released under the CoaxVision brand. As an established supplier to the broadcast sector globally, Cambridge Connectors supplies many of the world’s major manufacturers of professional broadcast equipment. This means that in a typical broadcast production, more often than not, Cambridge Connectors are present in the broadcast production chain. Express customisation Where cable assemblies are required, ISO9001 2015 accredited Cambridge Electronic Industries offers an express service, which can be customised as necessary. Skilled designers of precision connectors work closely with customers’ engineers to create exactly the products they require. Drawing on these skills, the company’s high data rate connectors and cable assemblies prove popular with original equipment manufacturers, systems builders, installers and resellers for use in a variety of professional broadcast, machine vision and digital imaging applications.
