TRIBUTE TO THE FALLEN
CPN Lighting has supplied a comprehensive lighting management system for the new £15.7 million
Remembrance Centre at the National Memorial Arboretum. The system uses a range of CPN
Lighting’s products to ensure the lighting control is precisely tailored to the needs of each space,
whilst minimising the environmental impact of operating the building.
The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, opened by Prince William, is the UK’s
year round centre of Remembrance and a spiritually uplifting place which honours the fallen. The
Arboretum forms part of the National Forest, with 30,000 maturing trees and over 330 memorials.
The new Remembrance Centre provides a gateway into the 150-acre site and is also home to
exhibition and interpretation spaces, retail space, a restaurant, a café and a learning centre.
In the restaurant area, CPN Lighting supplied a purpose built lighting control panel
that had both DALI dimming from DALI gateway units and single channel LCM’s for mains
switching, which were all housed in a purpose built enclosure.
With a brief that aimed to utilise natural light within the building to limit the energy used,
CPN included a scene setting panel for manual control with up to eight settable scene options.
This allowed for the restaurant, which is split into three areas all requiring differing light levels,
to each have a dedicated photocell for individual light control.

TESTING, TESTING
Lantei Compliance Services is growing in Wales after being awarded contracts to conduct fi xed wire testing and portable appliance testing for
Aberystwyth University.
At the end of 2016, Lantei was awarded the contract to conduct fi xed wire testing across the entirety of the University of South Wales
campus after a competitive tender process.
The nationwide contractor will undertake portable appliance testing on approximately 6,000
appliances at Aberystwyth University. Students are also allowed to bring their own appliances for Lantei
to inspect and test. Fixed wire testing will be undertaken on 22 buildings across the university campus.
The Aberystwyth University contracts were won following another competitive tender process.
The tender evaluation team were impressed with Lantei’s years of experience working with the
education sector across the UK. Competitive pricing was another important factor; the university
were assured that the value for money offered by Lantei would assist them in managing a large
estate within budget constraints.

POOL PARTY
Light Effi cient Design has announced a
new retrofi t LED lighting installation at
Plympton Swimming Pool, Plymouth.
The existing mercury lamps that
light the 25m community pool have
been successfully replaced by 21 Light
Effi cient Design retrofi t LED lamps. While
‘corn’ LED lamps were considered, the
LED 8090A fl oodlight solutions were
chosen due to their unique one sided
design which allows a very high light
output ratio. This ensures clean, bright
light (>80 CRI) while saving up to 70 per
cent in energy costs and emissions.
Locally based Rowse Electrical
supplied the LED lamps to the pool
maintenance team who carried out the
installation one evening after 9pm when
the pool had closed for the day.
Allowing affordable and non-invasive
replacement of 400W HIDs with 120W
LED by using the existing light fi ttings,
installation simply required bypassing
the ballast and directly connecting the
lamp holders to the 240V supply. The
new retrofi t LED lamps were then easily
and quickly installed.
Fully CE and ROHS certifi ed, low
maintenance is assured with a 50,000
hour rated lamp life together with
integrated active cooling fans rated for
70,000 hours.
