LIGHTING

Making waves

Penn Elcom , working closely with EW Production Services , has specified and supplied over 2,500 Osram , Comus LED and Integral LED lighting fixtures and lamps plus around 250m of LED Flex as part of a fully retro-fittable LED lighting solution for a number of different areas aboard the Fred Olsen Cruise Lines ship , MS Braemar .
EW Production Services ’ operations manager Paul Byrne has a longstanding relationship with Penn , whose Nigel Howse and Razvan Vasiliu coordinated the supply .
Braemar is the youngest ship in the Norwegian owned , UK based Fred Olsen Cruise Lines fleet , which dates back to 1848 , and is still a family run business . Offering a stylish and more intimate experience for up to 929 guests , Braemar ’ s smaller size also means it can access some of the more interesting and unusual ports and destinations worldwide enabling more unique and discerning itineraries .
The LED lights supplied by Penn are a mixture of Comus 2ft and 4ft tubes , along with single or twin IP battens , Integral LED panels and Osram E27 , E14 , GU10 lamps plus LED Flex with the appropriate dimmable drivers .
The Neptune Lounge on deck 5 at the front of the ship , with its cabaret stage featuring live music dance and comedy performances is at the hub of the onboard entertainment schedule .
The general lighting in this area has been replaced with a selection of dimmable LED lamps installed in the ceiling and wall luminaires , with LED flex now highlighting the two circular ceiling coves … which replaced the old 2ft fluorescent tubes .
E14 LED candle bulbs now graze up the pillars , and being dimmable allows the
new and added adaptability of being able to change the mood of the environment .
The fluorescent tubes used in the Coral Lounge for ambient lighting have also been replaced with LED flex tape – a practical and robust solution which creates a far superior effect .
The deco lamps in this area have been replaced with E14 LED candle bulbs , and the lighting is now all dimmable . The pillar lights are fitted with E27 LED bulbs and the MR16s in the false ceiling were swapped out with equivalent GU10 LEDs , allowing the removal of all the preexisting transformers .
In the Morning Light pub , the 40W halogen candle lamps have been switched to Osram candle lamps , with GU10 LEDs in the ceiling . More lights have been replaced in the main reception area and the Palms Café which has nearly 200 x LEDs .
Penn ’ s team recommended Osram LED floods for the main engine room while Integral LED panels and Comus LED tubes have been fitted throughout the engine control room ( ECR ) and the management offices .
Outside , around 30 dimmable marine grade submersible GU10 housings were fabricated to hold GU10 lamps that are uplighting glass panels on Decks 8 and 6 . Sixteen warm white downlighters in custom marine grade housings on Deck 6 highlight the outdoor Grill restaurant . All the areas are lit much better in terms of lux coverage and the quality of the light output from the new sources benefits all working and vacationing on the Braemar . In addition to the immediate electricity savings , the lower maintenance needed across the entire vessel will be another long term advantage and particularly significant as the majority of ship lighting is running 24 / 7 .
Occupancy switches
Just as important as the presence of light in occupied areas is the need to save energy when a room is empty . Danlers ’ new range of passive infrared ( PIR ) occupancy switches with daylight linked dimming ( maintained lux level ) is designed for lighting loads controlled by DALI , DSI or 1-10V dimmable ballasts . These products switch lights on when an area is occupied and maintain a chosen lux level by dimming the lights in response to changes in the ambient daylight level . There is also a ‘ Run-on ’ timer ( corridor function ) which allows the light to return to a minimum background level following a period of occupancy . This can either be for a chosen time or as a permanent background light . Each control has a switching relay , capable of switching 2A ( 500W ) LED lamps and fittings or up to 6A ( 1,500W ) of most other types of load . The new range includes flush and surface mounted PIR switches – as well as both surface high bay mounted or batten mounted high bay versions .
In control
The team at BEG has been focusing on giving electrical contractors and engineers an easy way of providing the end user with complex lighting control .
BEG ’ s DALISYS system is a total lighting control package with multi-sensors , relay modules , switch interfaces , a power supply with USB interface all included as well as DALI software for connecting with the DALI electronic ballasts .
Paul Jones , sales director for the UK & Ireland , explains , ‘ These individual components can be combined with each other according to the requirements of the size from a building ranging from single rooms and multi-rooms to a full building solution . The DALISYS is designed to be a scalable system for balanced and coordinated lighting management for any size of project .’
The many functions and set-up options mean that end users can achieve greater efficiency in the planning process and electrical installers benefit from reduced installation costs . For greater ease , the whole DALISYS system can be accessed via USB , Ethernet , LAN or Bluetooth on a smartphone by using the BEG App .

Newlec ’ s DALI range , by Rexel , offers a powerful solution that delivers flexibility , reliability and complete control to end users . The products are simple to install , making it one of the easiest ways for businesses to make considerable and instant energy savings .
The Newlec DALI range enables businesses to take a significant step towards achieving the targets required by the government ’ s fifth carbon budget .
Designed to offer flexible installation , the DALI lighting control system can be used to cover a single luminaire or can be connected to other DALI devices to create a more comprehensive system . The Newlec DALI network solution can be used to configure up to 64 ballasts or used as part of a much wider overall lighting strategy , connecting many hundreds of separate DALI systems on different floors of a building , forming them into a coherent lighting control system to offer facilities managers increased control of their energy usage .
Squared up
Forward thinking LED lighting company tp24 has designed a square bezel for the G40 plug and play downlight system , offering a choice of style . The square bezel fits the same way as the circular bezel , by simply twisting the bezel onto the downlight body , sealing the lamp in to create an IP65 rated downlight . The square bezel measures at 85mm in diameter and comes in chrome , satin silver and white finishes .
