News India UK Joint Tech Summit The recently held India-UK Tech Summit inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and the Prime Minister of United Kingdom, Theresa May, highlighted the visions of both the Prime Ministers to create a new era of bilateral economic relationship between the two countries. “The UK is known for its strength in technology and innovation. India offers vast opportunities through its markets, skilled human resources and competitive economic environment. Britain and India are an unbeatable combination for an enormously successful partnership” said Prime Minister Modi. The focus sectors at the Summit will be, Advanced Manufacturing & Robotics; Life Sciences & Healthcare and Smart Cities. The other tracks of the Summit will be Higher Education, Design, Intellectual Property, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. It was a critically important occasion showcasing India’s scientific and technological prowess at this prestigious platform and will reflect the two countries’ technological excellence, with a drive towards forging collaborations. Indian Smartphone Market Crosses 30 million Unit Shipments For the first time, the smartphone market in India crossed the 30 million unit shipments milestone in the third quarter of this year, the International Data Corp (IDC) reported on November 15, 2016. According to IDC's Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, smartphone shipments clocked 32.3 million units in Q3 2016 with 17.5 % growth over the previous quarter, maintaining its traction with 11 pct Yearon-Year growth. Lenovo Group, which constitutes almost a fourth of total online smartphone shipments, continues to lead online channel followed by Xiaomi. Samsung led the Indian smartphone market with 23 pct share with 8 pct sequential growth followed by Lenovo Group (including Motorola) with 9.6 pct share of smartphones. Reliance Jio sustained its fifth position in the period despite a healthy 20.9 pct growth over previous quarter while Xiaomi made its debut in top 5 as its shipments doubled over previous quarter. 4G smartphone shipments grew 24.8 pct over the previous quarter in Q3 2016. The rollout of Reliance Jio network has further increased the share of 4G-enabled smartphones in India. Seven out of 10 smartphone shipped in Q3 2016 were 4Genabled and 9 out of 10 smartphone sold by eTailers were 4G. ELE Times | 12 | December, 2016 India will be home to 10,500 Startups by 2020 India has emerged as the third largest startup base and such ventures are poised to grow 2.2 times to reach 10,500 by 2020 despite a perception that the ecosystem in the country has slowed down in the last year. India is in the third position just behind US and UK, and nearly 1,400 new start-ups are expected by end of 2016, up by 8-10 per cent from last year, revealed the "Indian Startup Ecosystem Maturing - 2016". The report also finds that Bengaluru, NCR, and Mumbai continue to lead as the major start-up hubs in the country. The number of tech start-ups in India is expected to grow by 10-12 per cent to over 4,750 by the end of 2016. With this impetus, India will become home to over 10,500 start-ups by 2020, employing over 2,10,000 people, reveals the report. It added that there is a 40 per cent increase in the number of active incubators and accelerators in 2016 with impetus from government and corporates. Industry welcomes positive steps initiated by Government in Telecom Sector A Seminar on “Digital India: Investment and Business Opportunities” was organized by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on November 17, 2016. The Seminar also commemorated one year of successful deployment of Indian Conditional Access System (iCAS). A practical hands-on program for mobile handset design engineers was also launched at the event.It is a first of its kind unique initiative where Government, Industry and an international partner have come together to develop local Skill and Competency of Mobile Handset Design Engineers in India. This is a step forward towards further promoting Investments into growing Mobile Manufacturing in the country. Under the programme, the first batch of 50 Engineers to be trained partially in India and largely in Taiwan starting 1st of December, 2016 was announced. The programme aims to build capacity and improve the competence level of Indian Mobile Manufacturers.
