Information Technology is part of the cutting edge of the Sheriff’s vision to “a modern approach to traditional law enforcement values”. Here are a few technologies making a difference.
This year the new virtualization efforts allowed virtual servers to be implemented in moments without additional hardware. This speeds the deployment and reduces the cost of new software systems. This concept is being extended to the desktops allowing for greater mobility and flexibility and reduced costs for each employee.
A new state of the art firewall system was implemented this year. Along with updated desktop protections, data protection has been greatly enhanced. Protecting confidential records is highest priority and takes significant effort in the face of today’s cyber environment.
The Sheriff’s Office must be operational 24
hours a day, every day of the year, even during
disasters of any type. This year a microwave
network connection was established to add
resiliency to essential systems. After
implementation, some vital cables experienced
environmental damage. The microwave link
carried the systems while repairs were made.
The small roof-top system, as seen below, more
than paid for itself in just this one incident.
The Sheriff’s Radio and Communications Unit made significant upgrades to the communications network for agencies within and outside El Dorado County.
The unit was able to complete the radio repeater
project in Kyburz, filling in the gap between
Placerville and Lake Tahoe. This new radio tower
was built with solar power and can run 10 days
without any sun. In addition to the Sheriff’s
patrol and Search and Rescue radios, this much
needed system covers CalTrans, El Dorado
County Fire and US Forrest Service; bringing
improved public service for the community.
Towers and repeaters were also upgraded and
tied into the Sacramento radio systems to
improve radio coverage for patrol in the western
part of the county. This not only improves service
for El Dorado County, but Placer and Amador
Counties can tie in as well. This coordination
between allied agencies is a valuable tool to
have in the case of large scale disasters or
threats.
The Radio and Communications Unit epitomizes
the Sheriff's mission of providing leadership and
allied agency support. They can often be found
assisting various community events with their
audio and PA systems. Aside from supporting the
Sheriff's Office, the unit continues to support
local fire, EMS, transportation and animal control
radio systems.
