POETRY
BONFIRE HEART
PREETI SHARMA
I cannot remember that one time
I had taken control,
Reigned briefly over the fissures
That is my life.
A kingdom so dense
That the air pushes against your skin,
And every breath is heavier than the last;
So dense and yet, so empty
That my hands comb and claw,
Racing behind the shadows
Promising more than they can deliver.
But I make them give birth
To a brand new universe.
And pushing my world against it
I let myself be dazzled and burnt alike
By the stars that emit more than just light;
I push through the heavy air
And I take my first flight
Over the dotted lines that are drawn
To highlight my wrongs and their rights.
Preeti Sharma is an English major who is currently pursuing a master’s degree in the same.
She started writing as a hobby but has developed a far deeper interest in the written word
over the years. She balances the same with an
array of other interests which include photography, music, art, gaming and food.

And I outdid myself
With the very first step I took;
And I wish he could see me,
See that I am more than my sighs and complaints
And know that I do not shine to dim others
But I am meant to be on fire
Burning away the excess of this world.
Although, at times, it seems as if
I am yet to light a spark
In the bonfire of my heart,
The fire sustains
Collected within these shy embers
That never burn out.
