IEEE – Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers – is the world’s largest professional
association, with more than 430000 members
worldwide, of whom 12000 are students. Divided into regions, IEEE Region 8 – Europe,
Middle - East, and Africa – comprises nearly
80000 members of whom 23000 are students.
IEEE Region 8 students belong to 450 student
branches. They organize and actively participate in events and congresses all around the
region.
The Students and Young Professionals Congress – SYP 2014, previously SB and GOLD
Congress (Student Branches and Graduates
of the Last Decade Congress) welcomes
speakers from various fields, both technical
and non-technical. The program also includes
cultural visits and other activities. Details may
be found on www.sypkrakow.pl.
Although it is responsible for 30% of the
world’s publications, and more than a thousand standards currently in use such as Wi-Fi
(IEEE standard 802.11), IEEE is not only dedicated to “advancing technology for humanity”...
It is also dedicated to serving its members
and developing them in any possible aspect,
and bringing them wonderful opportunities!
This August, the biggest Student event in Region 8 will take place August 6th till 10th, 2014
in the beautiful Polish city Krakow.
The congress will not only bring on an interesting opportunity for speakers and guests
to exchange experiences, expand their networks, meet with the group of young professionals and future engineers, but will also
allow participants to discover the beauty of
Krakow and enjoy the hospitality of the Polish
people.
The SYP Congress 2014 is not the only student event in IEEE. Other local congresses
take place in every part of Region 8, where
technical, non-technical, and IEEE-related
workshops are carried.
In fact, IEEE offers numerous programs and
contests that benefit students, professionals,
and the community. They include, but are not
limited to:
- IEEE Academic (academic.ieee.org) is an online multilingual educational resource where
students and professors create free online
educational material.
- EPICS in IEEE – or Engineering Programs in
Community Service – engages university and
high-school students to work on engineering-related projects for local humanitarian organizations.
- IEEE Xplore (ieeexplore.ieee.org) is an online
library where millions of engineering-related
publications can be found.
- IEEE Spectrum (spectrum.ieee.org) magazine covers the latest technology, engineering, and science news.
- IEEE Xtreme (ieee.org/xtreme) is a 24-hour
worldwide programming competition in which
teams of student members compete against
each other.
- IEEE MadC (ieeemadc.org) or Mobile Applications Development Contest challenges students and student teams to compete against
each other in developing mobile applications.
